Description: Presented at the Living to 100 Symposium, January 2011. Long-term care LTC insurance is frequently not covered by national social insurance programs. When costs are expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product, the future burden of financing LTC would not lead to unbearable tax levels and is not particularly large in comparison to the projected costs for pensions and health care. After identifying the breadth of definitions of LTC needs, it is argued that LTC is an insurable risk. The paper concludes that LTC social insurance is affordable in developed countries.

Description: Presented at the Living to 100 Symposium, January 2011. This paper examines the relationship between the earliest stages of dementia—mild cognitive impairment—and mortality. Using data from long-term care insurance applicants, and linking this to the Social Security Master Death File, the authors focus on the classification results of two cognitive screens used at various times in the underwriting process. Applying the Cox Proportional Hazards Model as well as relative mortality ratio analysis, the authors show that the proportion of individuals classified as cognitively impaired have significantly higher relative mortality compared to those classified as cognitively intact.

The primary purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how a natural reserve approach may be utilized effectively to adjust life insurance earnings in a manner consistent with GAAP. A second purpose of the paper is to demonstrate earnings patterns obtained by several possible alternative approaches to earnings adjustments. Description: Presented at Living to 100 symposium, January 2002. This is a report of a study in which the Cox proportional hazard model, a widely used survival analysis tool, was applied to profiling the mortality of an insured advanced-age population. The data was derived from 14 US insurers. This data represents policies issued between 01/01/1997 and 12/31/2000 to policyholders of age 60 or older. The major study results include measures of mortality, variations by selected risk factors, estimated mortality experience of the underlying population, and a comparison of mortality experience estimated by direct calculation, the Society of Actuaries’ SOA 1990-95 mortality study, and our extended Cox modeling technique.
